Stuck ignitions on older Hyundai models are a regular call, and dealers always push a full cylinder replacement. The TOY40-style ignition on Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, and Santa Fe from the mid-2000s through about 2010 wears down after years of daily use. The wafers loosen, the worn key catches, and the owner starts forcing it every morning until it either jams solid or the blade snaps.

A customer at Planet Fitness in Oxnard had been fighting his 2010 Hyundai Sonata ignition for three weeks. Some mornings the key turned fine, some mornings he sat in the lot for five minutes working it back and forth. The dealer quoted 299 for a complete ignition assembly. His buddy told him to try a locksmith first.

I checked the cylinder and the problem was three worn wafers, not a failed lock. So I used my ACDP to back up the immobilizer module data before touching anything mechanical.
