2002 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Sonata to the dealer for a new key?

Not for this car. Dealers sometimes default to telling people to tow in, but the 2002 Sonata key is a mechanical cut. There's no reason to move the vehicle anywhere. I come to you, work off the lock or the ignition cylinder to get the correct cut, and hand you a working key on the spot. The tow truck is not part of this job.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or the title. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or door jamb sticker to confirm I'm cutting the right key for the right car. Same standard a dealer would follow, done on site in a few minutes without any backend authorization process.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition and sometimes doesn't come out cleanly. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Both are worth checking on a car this age. The ignition cylinders on early 2000s Sonatas can wear down over time, and a worn key accelerates that. If your existing key has visible wear on the blade, a freshly cut key to the correct depths will sometimes feel noticeably smoother. If the cylinder itself is binding regardless of which key you use, that's a cylinder issue. I can tell the difference on site.

Q: Can a locksmith cut a key for this if I have no working key at all?

Yes. That's a standard all-keys-lost job on a mechanical key vehicle. I decode the lock directly, no original needed. The cut comes from reading the lock, not from copying an existing key. You end up with a key made to the actual lock profile, which is often more accurate than a worn copy would be anyway.

2002 Hyundai Sonata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A renter near Midtown Ventura called after his only key for a 2002 Hyundai Sonata broke off in his apartment door. Not the car door. The apartment. He'd been using the same key for both, the way a lot of people do when they're trying to keep things simple.

He had the broken shank, both pieces, and wanted to know if that meant towing the car somewhere. It didn't.

I drove out to his building and parked alongside the Sonata. Decoded the door lock, read the cut, and had a replacement key made right there on the street. Took maybe twenty minutes from the time I pulled up.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him something that made him pause before he even asked what the job involved. When I told him what I charged, he just shook his head a little. Not a dramatic reaction, just the quiet kind when something costs a lot less than you expected.

The car started on the first try. He asked if I could cut a spare while I was there. I did.

Hyundai Sonata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call and I'll come directly to wherever the Sonata is parked in or around Midtown Ventura. The 2002 Sonata uses a mechanical key, so I can decode the lock and cut a replacement right at the car. No tow, no trip to a dealer, no waiting for a service department to open. You stay with your vehicle the whole time.
