A woman off Navigators Way near Channel Islands Harbor called me about her 2006 Sonata. The fob was beat up, she said. Rubber buttons worn smooth, a hairline crack running along the case seam, and the emergency blade was flopping around in the housing like the pivot had given up entirely.
She had already called the dealer. They quoted her a number she wasn't happy about for a full replacement fob programmed to the vehicle. What she didn't know, and what the dealer didn't bother explaining, was that the circuit board inside her fob was completely fine.
I drove out and met her in the driveway. Took the fob apart right there on the hood. The electronics were solid. The board showed no corrosion, the battery contacts were clean, and the chip read correctly on my programmer. All she had was a tired shell and a worn button pad. The pivot pin on the blade had also walked loose, which explained the flop.
Moved the working board into a fresh shell, pressed in a new button pad, reseated the blade with a proper pin, and dropped in a new CR2032. Then I ran through every button, tested range from across the driveway, and verified the car was still reading the transponder correctly.
She looked at it like it was brand new. It basically was, except for the part that actually mattered, which was already working. She saved a good chunk over what the dealer wanted for something she didn't need.
