2007 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2007 Hyundai Sonata Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in College Estates, over near Oxnard Boulevard, who was standing in his driveway with a 2007 Sonata that wouldn't start. He'd had one key for the car for years.

That morning the key head had finally split apart after what looked like a long time of being stressed in the ignition. The blade was intact, the key still turned, but the car would crank and immediately die. Classic transponder failure once the chip housing breaks and the chip loses its position.

He told me the dealer had quoted him a wait of two days minimum and a number he wasn't happy about, but he said it more with exhaustion than anger. He'd already looked up how to have the car towed and was starting to figure out a rental.

I was already in Oxnard that afternoon. I pulled up, confirmed the VIN at the door jamb, checked his ID and registration, and looked at the original key. The plastic head was cracked clean through. The blade was fine, which made the cut easy.

I cut a new key to the vehicle in the van, then programmed the transponder through the OBD port. The whole job ran about thirty to forty minutes on site. He watched the whole thing, asked a few questions about how the programming works, and seemed genuinely surprised it was that simple.

He saved a significant chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and he didn't need a tow or a two-day wait. I left him with a working key and told him to get a spare made before the next one goes.
