Got a call from a guy staying at one of the extended-stay spots along Rice Avenue corridor in Oxnard. Work trip. His only key for a 2007 Sonata had finally given up at the hinge. The flip blade was just dangling, held by one tiny plastic ear that had been cracked for months. He'd been nursing it, pressing the blade back in and hoping. That night it snapped clean off in the ignition barrel.
He fished the blade out with needle-nose pliers, which was the right move. But now he had a loose blade and a fob shell in two pieces with the ID46 chip still glued inside.
I pulled the transponder chip from the broken housing, dropped it into a new aftermarket flip shell with the correct HYN14R blade profile, and cut the blade to code in the van. No programming needed because the original chip went right into the new case. The immobilizer never knew the difference.
The part that took the longest was cleaning old adhesive off the chip carrier so it seated flat in the new shell. Maybe twenty minutes total, start to finish.
He turned the key, engine caught, and he just nodded. No drama. He'd been picturing a tow and a full day at the dealer. Instead he was back in his room before his takeout got cold.
