2017 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular car key?

A smart key is a proximity fob. The 2017 Sonata's system detects the fob when it's close to the vehicle, which is what allows the push-button start to work. There's also a mechanical insert key stored inside the fob for situations where the battery dies and you need to physically unlock the door. That blade does not start the car on its own. For the engine to start, the fob has to be registered to the vehicle's security system.

Q: Why does getting a Hyundai key at the dealer take so long?

Three separate bottlenecks, and they stack. First is parts. Fob inventory has been inconsistent at a lot of dealers, and owners have reported waiting weeks for a replacement fob to even come in before programming can happen. Second is scheduling. Key programming happens during service hours and needs a tech with the right equipment. Appointment windows can run one to three weeks out depending on the dealer and the time of year. Third is the programming connection itself.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Sonata. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2017 Sonata smart key system does not have a self-programming mode. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combination that will register a new fob. That type of onboard relearn exists on older vehicles with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder. The smart key setup requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to pair a new fob to the vehicle's security system. If you bought a fob online, that's fine.

Q: My 2017 Sonata push-button start is acting up but the remote lock and unlock work fine. What's going on?

This is actually a pretty telling symptom. Remote lock and unlock run on a different signal than the proximity start system. If the buttons work but the start button doesn't see the fob, the fob itself is probably not the issue. A few things to check first. Try holding the fob directly against the start button and pressing. If the car starts that way, you've got a weak battery or a proximity range issue, not a dead fob.

2017 Hyundai Sonata Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in College Estates, a retired man needed a spare key made for his 2017 Hyundai Sonata. His daughter had been trying to get him to the dealer for months. He stopped driving the freeway a while back, and the nearest Hyundai dealer was a highway drive each way. Every time she had a day free, something came up.

I pulled into his driveway that morning. The Sonata was sitting right there, so there was no hunting for it, no parking structure, no waiting room.

The 2017 Sonata uses a smart key system, so this was not a simple cut-and-hand-over job. I connected through the OBD port, registered the new fob to the vehicle's security system, and verified the existing key still worked correctly alongside it. Both keys confirmed active before I closed the laptop.

He stood in the driveway the whole time, watching. Not hovering, just interested. When I handed him the second fob and showed him the battery check routine so he'd know the signs before it quit on him, he said he'd been putting this off for over a year.

The dealer had quoted a number for a single key that made his daughter wince. He got two keys, same driveway, same morning, for a fraction of that.

Hyundai Sonata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does it take to get a replacement key at the Hyundai dealer?▼

It varies a lot, and not in a good way. Best-case, you get a same-day appointment and leave in under an hour. That happens, but it's not the norm. The more common story on Hyundai owner forums is a multi-week wait for a programming appointment, sometimes followed by a cancellation because the dealer's backend programming connection is offline that day. On top of that, fob availability has been a real problem.
