Got a call from someone stuck at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. She was visiting a family member and came back to the parking lot to find her 1998 Hyundai Sonata locked with the key sitting on the center console. Plain as day through the window.

The Sonata was a third-gen Y3, no power locks, no remote, no transponder. Just a mechanical HY14 key and a door lock cylinder. That is it. Sometimes the simplest cars create the most stress because there is no backup button to press, no app to open.

I got there and picked the door lock. Older Hyundai wafer locks from this era are cooperative if you know the order and tension. Had her door open in a few minutes.

Then she mentioned the key had been getting harder to turn in the ignition. I looked at it and the original was worn down pretty badly on two of the cuts. Instead of copying a tired key, I decoded the lock and cut a fresh HY14 from the code. She turned the ignition and her eyes went wide. Said it had not felt that smooth in years.

No programming, no computer, no chip. Just a properly cut piece of metal. She asked what a dealer would have charged for a new key and a tow. I just told her she saved a good chunk by calling me out to the lot instead.
