1998 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 1998 Hyundai Sonata actually use?

A standard metal key cut to the vehicle. No remote, no fob, no battery to replace. It turns in the ignition cylinder and the door locks the same way keys worked for decades. If you've misplaced yours, replacement comes down to cutting a new blade to match your locks, either from a key code on record or by decoding one of the locks directly. That's it.

Q: How long does a key replacement take compared to going through the dealer?

With me, the 1998 Sonata is a fast job. I decode the lock, cut the key, test it in the ignition and both door locks, and you're done. Most of the time that's under twenty minutes at your location. The dealer route on older mechanical key vehicles can still drag out longer than it should. Some dealers no longer stock key blanks for late-90s Hyundais and have to order them.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my 1998 Sonata if I have absolutely no keys left?

Yes, and it's a routine call. All-keys-lost on a mechanical key vehicle means I either pull the key code tied to your VIN through locksmith data channels, or I decode one of your door locks directly to determine the correct cut. No keys present is not a problem. I've done plenty of these in parking lots and driveways across Oxnard where the owner was completely locked out with nothing to work from.

Q: A hardware store cut a copy of my Sonata key and it won't turn smoothly. What went wrong?

Worn key. The hardware store copied the wear pattern, not the original factory cut. When a key gets used for years, its peaks and valleys wear down. Copy a worn key and you get a slightly wrong cut that may turn stiffly, stick, or feel rough in the cylinder. A locksmith decodes the lock itself and cuts to the correct factory specification, not to whatever the worn original shows. That's the difference between a copy and a proper replacement.

1998 Hyundai Sonata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was doing a job on A Street in Downtown Oxnard when the next call came in. Guy in a parking lot near the Aldi on Saviers had locked his keys inside his 1998 Sonata. He'd already called a tow truck thinking he had no other option.

I told him to cancel the tow.

When I got there he was half-convinced the whole thing was going to be a production. He'd looked it up online and found forums full of people talking about chip programming and immobilizer sequences for other Hyundai models. Got himself worked up thinking his old Sonata was the same story.

It wasn't. The 1998 Sonata uses a straight mechanical key. I decoded the lock, cut him a new key blade right there on the car, and he was driving before the tow truck would have even shown up. He asked me twice if I needed to "program it to the computer." Nope. Cut and go.

He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him for a replacement key on a previous car. That number had him assuming every key job was expensive and slow. This one was neither.

Hyundai Sonata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Hyundai dealer to get a replacement key for my 1998 Sonata?▼

No. The 1998 Sonata uses a mechanical key, so a mobile locksmith can cut one for you on site without any dealer equipment or appointments. I come to your location in Downtown Oxnard, decode the lock or look up the key code from your vehicle's records, and cut the replacement right there. One visit, same day. The dealer route adds wait times and overhead costs that just don't apply to a job this simple.
