2020 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2020 Hyundai Sonata Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a text from a guy up in the Hillsides area of Ventura. He had been hiking one of the trails off the hill and came back to his 2020 Sonata with empty pockets. The key was gone. Somewhere on the trail, sometime in the last three hours, it had fallen out. He had no spare. The car was just sitting there.

He had service for about thirty seconds every few minutes, which was enough to get a message through. He dropped me his GPS pin. I loaded up for a Sonata job and drove out.

The tricky part with an all-keys-lost on this generation is that the immobilizer module has to be accessed and rewritten. I backed up the existing module data before touching anything, then worked through the programming sequence to register the new fob from scratch. The old key, wherever it ended up on that trail, was wiped out of the system at the same time. After that I cut a fresh blade for the mechanical insert and tested everything: door handles, start button, lock and unlock, all of it, standing in the dirt next to his car.

He was back on the road before the afternoon got away from him. No tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting on a part to ship. He mentioned the dealer was the first place he had called, and they told him to have it towed in and plan on at least a few days. That was a different outcome.
