2004 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2004 Hyundai Sonata use?

It's a metal key, full stop. No remote, no fob, no buttons. The key blade is cut to your specific vehicle and turns in the ignition and door locks mechanically. There's no chip to program and no separate fob battery to worry about. If you've seen fancier keys on newer Hyundais, this generation is a different world. Cutting the blade correctly is the whole job.

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made, and do I need an appointment?

With me, no appointment needed and the job is usually done in under thirty minutes. I come to you in North Ventura or wherever the car is sitting. The dealer experience tends to go differently. Owners on forums describe scheduling a visit days out, showing up, and sometimes being told the tech isn't available or the key stock needs to be ordered. For a vehicle this age, dealers don't always keep blank stock on hand, which adds days.

Q: I only have one key for my 2004 Sonata. Is it worth getting a spare cut now?

Yes, and the reasoning is simple. If you lose your only key or it breaks in the lock, the job goes from a quick duplicate to a full decode-from-lock job. That's still doable, but it takes longer and costs more. Getting a spare cut while you still have a working key is the cheaper move by a noticeable margin. One key is one bad day away from a bigger problem.

Q: My 2004 Sonata key broke off in the ignition. What happens now?

Broken key extraction is a separate job from cutting a replacement, but both can be done in the same visit. I carry the extraction tools to pull a snapped blade out of the ignition cylinder without damaging the cylinder itself. Once the broken piece is out, I decode what's left of the blade or decode the lock directly and cut a new key on site.

2004 Hyundai Sonata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in North Ventura picked up a 2004 Sonata off Craigslist. Solid car, low drama, one key. The seller mentioned getting a spare as a casual afterthought, like it would cost him twenty bucks at any hardware store.

He went to the Hyundai dealer first because that seemed like the right call. They quoted him a wait, a service fee, and a number that caught him off guard. He called me to ask if that was actually what a metal key costs now.

I told him I'd come to him.

I met him at his place in North Ventura and decoded the key blade right off his original. Cut a fresh blank on my machine, handed it over, and had him test it in the door and the ignition himself so he could see it work before I packed up. The whole thing took under twenty minutes.

He kept saying he expected it to be more complicated. That's the thing about this generation of Sonata. It's a metal key. The car reads the cut, the ignition turns, and that's the whole story. The dealer price didn't reflect the simplicity of the job. Mine did.

Hyundai Sonata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Hyundai dealer to get a replacement key for a 2004 Sonata?▼

Not at all. The 2004 Sonata takes a metal key, and a mobile locksmith can cut one right where the car is parked. There's no dealer-only equipment involved. I can decode your existing key, or if you've lost it, decode the lock cylinder directly and cut a new blade from that reading. One visit, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer charges.
