2000 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2000 Hyundai Sonata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in Juanamaria, I got a call from a guy who'd been fighting his 2000 Hyundai Sonata ignition for about three weeks. Some mornings it turned first try.

Other mornings he was sitting in a parking lot working the key back and forth for five minutes before it finally caught. He'd already been to a dealer, who told him the cylinder was worn out and quoted him a complete ignition assembly replacement.

His buddy said to call a locksmith first.

I pulled up, took a look at the cylinder, and the issue wasn't the whole lock. It was a handful of worn wafers inside it. The lock internals on these older Sonatas see a lot of daily use over two decades, and the wafers loosen up or wear down to the point where a key that used to fit perfectly starts catching on the way in or binding on the turn.

I decoded the existing lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. He watched the whole thing. I laid the old wafers out on the hood so he could actually see the wear and understand why it had been sticking.

The key slides clean now. He didn't replace a single part that wasn't actually broken, and he paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted for a job that would have replaced components that still had life in them.
