Got a call from a guy over on Oxnard Boulevard who worked at one of the warehouses off the main drag. His 2008 Sonata had one key left, and the flip housing was cracked right at the pivot. The blade was just rattling around loose inside the shell. He had been folding it shut by hand and holding it together with a rubber band for about two weeks.
He told me he called the Hyundai dealer. Parts quoted him on a new flip key assembly, programming labor on top of that, and they wanted the car dropped off for half a day. He could not swing that with his shift schedule.
I showed up during his lunch break. Plugged my programmer into the OBD-II port under the dash. On the 2008 Sonata, the immobilizer module (Smartra unit, sometimes referenced as the Smartra 2 on this generation) holds the transponder codes. The tool reads the system PIN directly from the Smartra on most NF Sonatas, so there is no waiting on a dealer code request.
Cut a fresh HY15 blade on the van, seated a new ID46 chip into a solid aftermarket flip shell, and ran the registration sequence. Tested the mechanical turn in the ignition, confirmed the immobilizer light on the dash dropped out after a second like it should, and the engine fired clean.
He pulled the rubber band off his old key, looked at it, and just tossed it in the trash right there. Whole thing took about 25 minutes. He saved a good chunk over the dealer route and never left the parking lot.
