Got a call from a woman parked near Third Avenue in Downtown Chula Vista. Her 2000 BMW 7 Series started fine that morning, but by the time she finished her errand, none of the remote buttons were doing anything. Locks, trunk release, all dead. But I kept going. I ran three consecutive starts, walked the range out, and checked that the transponder was reading clean at startup. The immobilizer side was healthy the whole time, which is why she never had a stall. She just had a dead remote.
She was expecting a diagnosis that ended with a tow or a wait for a dealer-ordered key. Instead the whole thing was done on the curb in Downtown Chula Vista in under an hour. The dealer comparison came up on its own when she asked what this would have cost her there. I just told her to call around and compare.
