2000 BMW 7 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2000 BMW 7 Series Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman parked near Third Avenue in Downtown Chula Vista. Her 2000 BMW 7 Series started fine that morning, but by the time she finished her errand, none of the remote buttons were doing anything. Locks, trunk release, all dead. She figured the key was shot and braced for whatever the dealer was going to tell her.

I pulled up and the first thing I did was pop open the remote head key and check the battery. CR2032, which is the correct cell for this fob. The one inside looked original. Not corroded, but sitting on a slightly bent contact terminal, which will bleed voltage quietly over time without ever looking obviously wrong. Swapped the cell and reseated everything properly.

That fixed the remote functions. Lock, unlock, trunk, all three buttons responding at range from across the parking lot.

But I kept going. I ran three consecutive starts, walked the range out, and checked that the transponder was reading clean at startup. The immobilizer side was healthy the whole time, which is why she never had a stall. She just had a dead remote.

She was expecting a diagnosis that ended with a tow or a wait for a dealer-ordered key. Instead the whole thing was done on the curb in Downtown Chula Vista in under an hour. The dealer comparison came up on its own when she asked what this would have cost her there. I just told her to call around and compare.
