I got a call from the Las Americas Area on a Tuesday afternoon. The guy had been running errands near the border, came back to his 2007 BMW 7 Series in a parking lot, and the fob just stopped talking to the car. Not dead, not cracked. It looked fine. But the car sat there locked and refused to acknowledge it.
He had already done the thing everyone tries: held the fob closer, tried the other door, checked the battery compartment by rattling the key against his palm. None of it worked.
When I pulled up, I started where you always start on these. Popped the fob, pulled the CR2032, tested the voltage. It read low enough to explain everything. Car batteries and key fob batteries both hide their actual condition until they cross a threshold, and this one had crossed it.

That told me something. A voltage fix that doesn't fully resolve the issue on this platform usually means the fob needs to be re-paired to the vehicle security system. The module had dropped it, probably after the battery dipped long enough that the rolling code sync broke.
I connected my programming equipment to the OBD port, pulled up the module, and re-registered the fob. The whole process took about 40 minutes in that parking lot.
He watched me work from the sidewalk. At the end he said he had called the BMW dealer first and they told him to have it towed in, that they'd need to order parts, and that he should expect a few days minimum. He was standing next to a running car while they were still quoting him tow fees.
Saved him a good chunk and got him back on the road the same afternoon.
