2018 BMW 7 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2018 BMW 7 Series Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Ramona Highlands had just bought a used 2018 BMW 7 Series from a private seller. Clean car, loaded, one key. The seller told him spare keys were easy to sort out on his own. He believed it.

He called a dealer first. They quoted him a wait on the part, a service appointment, and a number that made him sit down. He found me online and called to ask if the dealer quote was real or if they were padding it. I told him the dealer number was in range for what they charge. I also told him what I charge, and that I come to him.

He was home in Ramona Highlands when I pulled up. One working key in hand, wanted a second.

The 7 Series fob for this year is not a simple piece of hardware. It pairs to the vehicle security system over a process that requires professional diagnostic equipment. I connected at the OBD port, verified the existing key data was intact, and enrolled the new fob alongside the original. Cut the emergency blade to match. Tested both fobs: lock, unlock, all buttons, and verified the car recognized each key individually.

He held both fobs up and looked at them like he was waiting for the catch. There wasn't one.

I explained before I left why what he just bought was worth it beyond the spare key itself. On this car, if you ever end up all-keys-lost, the job is a different level. Modules get involved. Time goes up. Cost goes up. A second key made today, while the first one is still working, is the cheapest insurance he can buy for this vehicle.

He understood it the second I put it that way.
