Out in the Lake Poway Area, I got a call from a 7 Series owner whose fob had seen better days. The shell was cracked along the seam, the buttons had worn down to bare plastic nubs, and the folding blade was loose enough to rattle when she picked it up. Cosmetically, the thing was done.
She'd already been to the dealer. They came back with a number for a complete key replacement, electronics and all. She pushed back and asked if the internals could be reused. The service advisor told her it wasn't something they did, full replacement only.
That's where I came in.
I met her at her garage. Before touching anything, I confirmed the fob was still communicating with the vehicle normally. Doors locked and unlocked, the car recognized it at the handle, and the start function worked. The electronics were fine. This was purely a housing problem.
I sourced a matching replacement shell, carefully transferred the internal components, reseated the CR2032, and reassembled everything. Then I walked every function: door handles on both sides, trunk release, all four buttons, start authorization. Everything behaved exactly as it should.
She looked at the fob in her hand and said she almost couldn't tell it was the same key.
The dealer's quote was for a full replacement she didn't need. A shell transfer, done carefully and correctly on site, saved her a good chunk. The electronics inside a well-maintained BMW fob can outlast the housing by years.
