Out in the Viejas Area in Alpine, I got a call about a 2002 BMW 7 Series that had been sitting in a driveway for a few months while the owner was traveling. He came home, tried the fob, got a key warning on the dash, and the car would not start. He figured it was just the battery in the fob and handled that himself. Still nothing.
He had already called one other locksmith before me. That guy showed up, poked around for forty minutes, told him the immobilizer module was shot, and quoted him something he described as "a lot." The owner sent him away and called me.
I drove out and we started simple. The new CR2032 he had installed was seated, contacts looked clean. But when I ran diagnostics, the fob had lost its pairing entirely, which is exactly what happens when a key goes fully dead and sits that way. The rolling code was out of sync and the immobilizer was rejecting it. Not a failed module. Just a key that needed to be properly re-registered.
I re-paired the fob on site, verified all four buttons, confirmed a clean start, and walked him through what to do if the car sits again for a long stretch. He shook his head a little when I told him what the first guy had quoted. I didn't pile on about it. The job was done and the car ran.
The dealer would have had him tow it in and wait days for a service appointment. We handled it in the driveway off Willows Road.
