I got a call from a woman in Fairbanks Ranch on a Tuesday morning. Her 2016 BMW 7 Series wouldn't start. She'd gotten a warning on the iDrive display related to the steering lock, and the car just sat there. Not a crank, not a ready state, nothing. She'd already called the dealer, who told her to have it flatbedded in. They quoted her a new steering lock module plus reprogramming time. She said the number made her feel sick, so she called me instead before booking the tow.
I drove out to her place in Rancho Santa Fe with my ACDP and connected at the OBD port. The fault was logged, but the steering lock hardware itself read fine. What I was looking at was a voltage-triggered fault. The main 12V battery in the trunk was weak enough that during the last shutdown cycle, the steering lock module didn't get a clean release signal and latched a fault.
I cleared the fault, cycled the system, and watched the steering lock disengage properly. Her fob, which she'd been blaming, had nothing to do with it. I showed her the live data on my screen so she could see the before and after herself. Then I walked every function: start, display, lock, unlock, the whole sequence. Everything was normal.
She asked me what the dealer would have replaced. I told her honestly: the module she didn't need, and probably the fob for good measure.
The dealer comparison is almost an afterthought here. The real point is that a correct diagnosis on site, in her driveway, with the right equipment, saved her a tow and a repair she didn't need.
