2015 Buick Lacrosse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a remote flip key and how does the replacement process work?

A remote flip key is exactly what it sounds like. The metal blade folds into the fob body when you're not using it, and flips out when you need to start the car or unlock a door manually. The fob side handles your remote lock and unlock functions. The blade side goes into the ignition. Replacing one involves two separate things. First, the blade has to be cut to match your specific vehicle.

Q: What if my key broke off inside the ignition?

Extraction first, then inspection. A broken blade can bend or dislodge the internal wafers in the cylinder, which means even after the piece is out, the ignition may stick or not turn properly. I check the cylinder condition before cutting a new key, because there's no point programming a replacement if the ignition itself is damaged. If the cylinder needs work, I'll tell you right there and we go from there. It's all diagnosed on site.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or does it have to be a specific part?

This comes up constantly. The short answer: it depends on what you bought. The fob has to match the factory FCC ID for your vehicle. If the one you ordered online carries the correct factory FCC ID, there's a good chance it will work once it's enrolled. If it's a generic aftermarket shell with a different ID, programming may fail or produce partial function, where some buttons work and others don't.

Q: My fob works fine close up but the range has gotten really short. Is the fob dying?

Usually it's just the CR2032 running low. These fobs give you fair warning before they quit entirely, and reduced range is the first sign. Swap the battery, make sure it's seated flat against both contacts, and retest. If range comes back, you're done. If it's still weak after a fresh battery, the fob itself may need replacement and programming.

2015 Buick Lacrosse Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out in Bostonia on a Saturday morning. His 2015 LaCrosse had been sitting in his driveway since Thursday. The fob stopped working, he had no spare, and he had already ordered a replacement online thinking he could program it himself.

He couldn't. That's not a knock on him. A lot of people don't realize the flip key for this car needs professional diagnostic equipment to enroll the new transponder. There's no ignition-turn sequence, no button trick that gets it done.

I pulled up, he met me outside. The fob he ordered online was the right shell and the right button count, so that part worked in his favor. I verified the blade cut on his door lock first, then connected to the OBD port and went through the GM security protocol to enroll the new key. The system ran through its timer, I watched the progress, and then came the part I always make time for: full testing. Every button, both lock and unlock confirmed from a distance, the trunk release, and three consecutive ignition cycles to make sure the transponder read clean every time, not just once.

He asked why three starts. I told him one start can be a fluke. Three in a row with no hesitation tells me the immobilizer is happy and staying happy.

He'd gotten a quote from the dealer earlier in the week. When I told him what I charge, he said he wished he'd called Thursday.

Buick Lacrosse Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2015 Buick LaCrosse key fob have?▼

Five buttons. If you're replacing a lost key and have never seen the original, that's fine. We already know what this vehicle takes and we confirm every button function during the job: lock, unlock, trunk release, remote start if the vehicle is equipped, and the panic button. Nothing gets handed back until all five are verified working.
