2016 Buick Regal
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to know the FCC ID to get a replacement fob?

No. If your key is lost, that information is gone with it, and that's fine. The year, make, and model is enough to identify the correct fob for your vehicle. The factory FCC ID is printed on the back of an original fob if you have one to reference, but it's not something you need to supply.

Q: I lost all my keys. Can you still make a new one?

Yes, and it's one of the more common calls I get. All-keys-lost on the 2016 Regal means I come to the vehicle, decode the lock cylinder or pull the key code through the OBD port, cut a new flip key blade to fit, and then enroll the transponder chip through the diagnostic connection. The old lost keys get cleared from the system so they can't be used to start the car.

Q: My 2016 Regal starts fine but throws a key warning on the dash. What's going on?

This comes up on these Regals. If the car starts and runs but you're seeing a key-not-detected warning, the most common causes are a weak battery in the fob, a fob that's lost its enrollment with the vehicle, or a body control module that needs the key re-registered. It can also happen after a battery disconnect on the car itself, which sometimes causes the vehicle security system to flag the key. Start with the CR2032.

Q: Can I program a second key myself at home?

Not on this vehicle. The 2016 Regal remote flip key requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to enroll a new fob. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works here. If you bought a fob online, the hardware is just a shell until it gets programmed to your car.

2016 Buick Regal Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Ocean View Hills, I pulled up to a Regal parked on a residential street on a Saturday morning. The owner had already tried a new battery, which was the right instinct, but the fob still wasn't locking the car from more than a few feet away and the remote start wasn't responding at all.

He handed me the fob and I looked it over. The CR2032 he installed was fine, but the battery contact had a slight outward bow to it, probably from whoever pried the fob open before me. Not making full contact. I straightened it, reseated the battery, and tested range right there on the sidewalk. Lock and unlock from across the street, clean both directions.

That handled the range issue. But I still connected to the OBD port and verified the key was properly enrolled in the system, because a partially registered fob can behave exactly like a weak-battery fob and then surprise you later. Everything checked out. I ran through all five buttons, tested ignition start three times, walked about 30 feet away and tested the remote functions again.

The whole job took less than an hour. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause before he looked us up. I left him with a car that worked the way it should and a spare key on order if he wanted one.

Buick Regal Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 2016 Buick Regal key fob use?▼

CR2032. It's one of the most common fob batteries out there, available at any pharmacy or auto parts store. When I make a replacement key, I install a fresh one before I hand it over. Worth noting: a dying CR2032 doesn't always just stop working. It often causes reduced range first, then intermittent response, then nothing. If your fob is acting flaky, swap the battery before assuming you need a new key.
