1998 Cadillac Seville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Cadillac to the dealer for a key replacement?

Not if you call me. Dealers will often push you toward towing the car in, especially on an all-keys-lost situation, because they need the vehicle in their bay to program. That's a tow bill on top of parts and labor before they even look at it, and then you're waiting for them to fit it into their schedule. I come to the car.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on the Seville before any work starts. That's standard procedure whether you go to a locksmith or a dealer, and it protects everyone. Have those two things ready when I arrive and the process moves quickly.

Q: My 1998 Seville cranks fine but dies immediately after starting. Is that the transponder?

That's a classic sign of the immobilizer doing its job. When the vehicle security system doesn't recognize the transponder chip in the key, it lets the engine fire briefly and then cuts it. The car isn't broken. It's doing exactly what it was designed to do when it sees an unregistered key. This also happens with worn keys where the chip has been damaged over time, or with replacement keys that were cut correctly but never programmed to the vehicle.

Q: Can I program a replacement transponder key myself at home?

No. The 1998 Seville doesn't have a DIY add-a-key sequence you can run from the driver's seat. Enrolling a new transponder key requires a scan tool connected to the OBD port. If you bought a key online, it still needs professional equipment to pair it to your car. The blank and the cut are only part of it.

1998 Cadillac Seville Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from Winter Gardens, off the east end of Lakeside. Guy inherited a 1998 Cadillac Seville from a family member and ended up with one key, badly worn, and no spare. He wasn't even sure it would last another season. Smart move to get ahead of it.

He told me he'd already called the dealer before reaching out to me. They quoted him a multi-day turnaround because they'd have to order the blank, and the labor to program it wasn't exactly friendly either. He wasn't thrilled about leaving the car at a dealership for two or three days just to get a spare key cut and programmed.

I pulled up to his place with the blank already on my van. Cut the new key to match his lock, then connected to the OBD port and ran the transponder enrollment through the vehicle security system. The Seville accepted the new key without any drama. I tested it cold, tested it again after a few minutes, and had him try it himself so he could see it working before I packed up.

Took about 45 minutes on site. He paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted, didn't lose the car for two days, and walked away with a spare that actually worked. He said the original worn key was so smooth he was worried it wouldn't even turn the cylinder anymore. We dealt with that too.
