2003 Cadillac Seville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a transponder key and why can't I just copy it at the hardware store?

Your 2003 Cadillac Seville uses a transponder key. There's a chip inside the head of the key that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer when you turn the ignition. If the chip isn't there, isn't programmed, or isn't recognized, the car will crank and either not start at all or start and immediately stall. A hardware store cuts the metal blade shape. That's it.

Q: What equipment do you use to program keys for a 2003 Cadillac Seville?

For this vehicle, the job involves cutting the blade to match your ignition and door locks, then programming the transponder chip to the immobilizer using a professional key programming tool. I carry equipment that handles GM vehicles from this era without issue. The 2003 Seville is not in the category of vehicles that require factory security system credentials or gateway bypass tools. That layer of complexity came in later years.

Q: My 2003 Seville starts and immediately stalls every time. Is that a key problem or something else?

That symptom points directly to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder. The engine control system gets a start signal, fires briefly, then shuts down when it doesn't get a confirmed chip read. It's one of the more recognizable patterns on GM vehicles from this generation. Could be a worn or damaged key where the chip has failed.

Q: Can I add a second key for my 2003 Seville, or do I have to go to the dealer?

You don't have to go to the dealer. Adding a second transponder key to a 2003 Seville is a standard mobile job. As long as you have at least one working key, the process is faster than an all-keys-lost situation. Dealer isn't your only option here, and for a vehicle this age, the wait time and cost at a dealership rarely make sense when a mobile locksmith can handle it in your driveway in Bancroft.

2003 Cadillac Seville Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in Spring Valley, running a call near Bancroft, when the second call came in. A couple had been at a spot near the neighborhood and came back to a Cadillac Seville that would start, run for two seconds, and die. Over and over. They'd been at it for twenty minutes thinking it was a fuel issue.

It wasn't fuel. The moment they described "starts then immediately stalls," I knew what I was looking at. That's the theft deterrent system cutting the engine after a momentary signal read. Classic symptom when the transponder communication breaks down mid-session, whether from a worn key, a weak signal, or a prior battery event the system never fully recovered from.

I had the right blank already cut to the vehicle's key code and my programming equipment in the van. On site in Bancroft, I pulled up the immobilizer module, ran the transponder pairing sequence, and confirmed communication between the new key and the vehicle security system before I even handed it over. First turn, it started and stayed running.

They'd already called the dealer. The dealer said to tow it in and plan for a wait. I was done before the tow truck would have shown up. Dealer comparison wasn't even really the point. The point was they drove home that night.

Cadillac Seville Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few red flags worth knowing. If they won't give you a real estimate for your specific vehicle over the phone, that's a problem. If the opening line is a suspiciously low "service call" fee with "we'll figure out the rest when we get there," that's a bait and switch. It's common enough that there are whole threads about it on Cadillac owner forums. Search their business name.
