I got a call from a guy in The Crosby section of Rancho Santa Fe on a Tuesday morning. He was at his office with back-to-back meetings until mid-afternoon and his Flex was sitting in the parking lot with a key that had stopped communicating with the car after he swapped the battery himself the night before. Passive entry was dead. The car would start if he held the fob right against the start button, but that was it, and it wasn't reliable.
He couldn't tow it during business hours. He couldn't leave. He'd already called the dealer and the earliest appointment they had was days out, plus they wanted him to bring the vehicle in, which meant arranging a tow on top of everything else.

The fob battery was a CR2032, which was correct, but it had been seated just off-center and one of the contact clips had a slight outward bow from being pried open. I reseated the battery, straightened the clip, and tested passive entry right there in the lot. That alone fixed the door handles. But I still plugged into the OBD port and ran a full resync to make sure the immobilizer had a clean handshake, because an intermittent start is the kind of thing that comes back at the worst moment if you don't confirm it properly.
Both keys came back solid. All five buttons on his fob worked. I walked him through what had actually happened with the battery swap so he understood why the clip matters and how to do it right next time.
He was back in his meeting before 1pm. His Flex never left the parking spot.
