I got a call on a Tuesday morning from a guy out in Flinn Springs, just east of Lakeside proper. He runs a small landscaping crew and his 2018 Transit Connect was sitting dead in his driveway. He'd tried a new CR2032 the night before, nothing changed. The key warning was still showing on the dash when he turned the blade, and the van wasn't starting.

When I pulled up, he already had the hood open like that was going to help. I didn't say anything.

I popped the fob apart first, right on the hood. The new battery he'd installed was seated fine, but one of the contact points had a slight corrosion film on it, barely visible. Cleaned it, reseated the battery, tested the remote functions. Locks worked. But the van still wouldn't start.

That told me the blade-side transponder enrollment had dropped out, probably from the van sitting without a functioning key signal long enough to cause a dropout. Happens. I connected through the OBD port, ran the key learning sequence, and enrolled the existing fob back into the system as a fresh registration.

Turned the key. Started right up.

The whole job ran about 35 minutes. He asked what the dealer would have said. I told him they'd probably want to order a new fob, program it, and charge accordingly. He shook his head and went back inside to get his crew moving.

I was back on the 8 heading toward Lakeside before 9am.
