I got a call from a gentleman in La Mesa Village who needed a spare key for his 2023 Ford Transit Connect. He mentioned right away that he used a walker, that his son was out of state, and that getting to a dealership fifteen miles away wasn't really an option for him that week. The Transit Connect takes a 4-button smart key with a CR2450 cell. I had the right blank in the van. When I pulled his current fob apart to check the battery as a baseline, the CR2450 was original, meaning it had been in there since the car was new. Not dead, but reading low. That alone explained some of the inconsistency he'd been seeing at the door handles.
I swapped the battery in his existing fob, then paired the new one to the vehicle through the OBD port. Walked every button on both fobs to confirm lock, unlock, and the other functions all responded correctly. Showed him how to pop the fob open so he'd know how to swap the cell himself when the time came, and he actually seemed interested in that part. He had a workbench in the garage and that kind of thing mattered to him.
He never had to make a phone call for a ride. Never had to sit in a waiting room. By the time I packed up the van, he had two working keys, a fresh battery in the original, and a spare he'd never had before.
Getting to a dealer and back would have been a half-day production for him. This was a driveway job.
