I got a call from a woman stranded in the parking lot of a shopping center off Main Avenue in Downtown Fallbrook. She had just come back from a trip, tossed her bag in the cargo area before she left, and somewhere in the shuffle the emergency insert key ended up buried under everything. The fob was completely dead. No lock response, no unlock response, and when she got into the vehicle through another means, the push-button start would not wake up either.
She had already called the Ford dealer. Earliest they could see her was four days out, and even then she would need a tow because she could not drive the vehicle to them without the start working. The tow quote was not pretty.

Once inside, I connected through the OBD port and pulled up the key programming status. Both her fobs were still enrolled and healthy. Nothing had fallen out of the system. The whole issue was the dead CR2450 in the fob she had been using. When that battery drops below threshold, the fob loses the ability to communicate with the vehicle entirely, which means no remote response and no proximity wake signal for the start button. It looks like a complete system failure when it is actually just a battery.
Swapped the CR2450, confirmed communication, walked every button, and ran the start sequence twice to make sure the system was responding cleanly. She was driving in about twenty minutes.
She mentioned she almost paid for a tow and a dealer appointment that would have solved nothing because both her keys were perfectly good the whole time. Dealer comparison was not even really the point. The point was she did not have to wait four days to find out her key was fine.
