2002 Honda Passport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: I have a spare key someone else used to have. Should I be worried they could still use it on my 2002 Passport?

Honest answer: on a vehicle like this, anyone with a working cut of that key blade can use it. There's no key-memory system to wipe or reprogram on this generation. If you're concerned about a key that's out there with someone you no longer trust, the real solution is rekeying the locks. A locksmith can rekey the ignition cylinder and the door locks to a new key cut so the old key no longer works.

Q: Does my 2002 Honda Passport key have any remote or fob attached?

No. The 2002 Passport uses a plain metal key. No fob, no remote lock or unlock, no battery to replace. The key blade is the whole thing. If you've seen listings online for fobs or remotes associated with this vehicle, those are aftermarket add-on systems, not factory equipment tied to the key replacement job. When I cut you a replacement, it's a metal key cut to your vehicle. That's the complete job.

Q: My 2002 Passport ignition feels sticky and the key is hard to turn. Do I need a new ignition cylinder?

Not necessarily. Stiff ignitions on vehicles this age are usually a worn key, a worn cylinder, or both working against each other. If the key is visibly chewed up at the tip or along the cuts, a freshly cut replacement on a new blank will sometimes smooth things right out because it's hitting the wafers cleanly instead of dragging. If a fresh cut doesn't fix it, the cylinder itself may need service or replacement.

Q: Can you cut a key for my 2002 Passport if I have absolutely no working key to copy?

Yes. No working key needed. I decode the lock directly, which gives me the cut depths, and I cut the blade from there. It's the same result as if you handed me an original. This is actually the cleaner method because copying a worn key can reproduce the wear right into the new one.

2002 Honda Passport Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call on a Saturday morning from a woman near the CSUSM Area. She'd been sitting in a parking lot for about an hour. She had one key left for her 2002 Honda Passport, and it had snapped off in the door lock while she was trying to get in.

She mentioned she'd already called one other locksmith who quoted her a long wait and talked about programming fees. That part caught my attention. There's nothing to program on this vehicle. A quote that includes programming time on a 2002 Passport is a sign the other guy either looked up the wrong year or was padding the ticket.

I pulled the broken piece out of the lock cylinder with an extractor, decoded the lock while I was in there, and cut her a fresh key blade on site. Fit the ignition, fit the door, done. She had a working key in her hand before most people finish their morning coffee.

She asked if she should get a spare made. I told her yes, and cut her a second one right there. Two keys from the same decode, same stop, no second trip. The dealer would have needed her to tow the car in and schedule a slot. She did not need any of that.

Honda Passport Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle a lost key situation on my 2002 Honda Passport?▼

Call a mobile locksmith. This vehicle uses a mechanical key, so there's no programming equipment involved, no dealer-only software, and no reason to tow anywhere. A locksmith can decode the lock on site and cut you a working key right there in the CSUSM Area parking lot or your driveway. Dealers will sometimes turn away key-cutting-only jobs on older vehicles or route you through a service appointment anyway. A mobile locksmith skips all of that.
