1998 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 1998 Sonata to the dealer for a replacement key?

No. Dealers will often tell you to tow it in, and for a newer car with complex electronics that can sometimes make sense. But the 1998 Sonata runs a mechanical key. There is no programming, no module communication, no backend system that requires dealer equipment. I cut the key at your car. The tow truck is not part of this job.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I'll also verify the VIN from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, done on site in a couple of minutes. For a 1998 Sonata there's no backend authorization required, so the whole verification step is quick and local.

Q: My key turns hard and sometimes feels like it's going to get stuck. Is that a key problem or something else?

On a car this age, almost always the ignition cylinder. The 1998 Sonata's cylinder has had over two decades of key insertions and the tumblers wear down unevenly. A worn cylinder can make even a correctly cut key feel stiff or gritty. Sometimes the wafers wear to the point where a key that used to work starts binding. If you're at that stage, a fresh cut key won't fix it - the cylinder itself needs attention.

Q: I found an old spare key. How do I know if it'll actually work?

Try it in the door lock first, then the ignition. On a mechanical key car from this era, if it turns the lock and starts the car, it works. No programming check needed. The one thing to watch: old spare keys sometimes sat unused for years and the blade edges can be slightly different from the original if it was cut from a copy of a copy. If it feels rough going in, don't force it.

1998 Hyundai Sonata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman over in Eden Gardens, Solana Beach. Her 1998 Sonata had been sitting in the driveway for two days because she'd lost her only key somewhere in the house and couldn't find it.

She'd already called the dealer. They told her to tow it in, which made no sense to her since the car was right there in her driveway and she just needed a key cut. She called me instead.

I pulled up, decoded the lock right at the door, cut a replacement blade to match, and she was driving again in under twenty minutes. No tow truck, no sitting in a dealer waiting room, no leaving the car overnight.

She mentioned what the dealer had quoted for the whole visit. I won't repeat the number, but she said she saved a good chunk. What I remember is she said she wished she'd called me first instead of spending two days without her car.

Hyundai Sonata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. I come directly to you in Eden Gardens or anywhere else in Solana Beach. The 1998 Sonata takes a standard mechanical key, so I can decode your lock on site and cut a working key right there without needing the car moved anywhere. No tow, no waiting for a dealer appointment. Call, give me your location, and I'll handle it at the vehicle.
