That connection goes down, and your appointment gets pushed with no clear reschedule.

I have a spare key but now my 2012 Sonata shows a key warning on the dash and won't recognize either fob. What happened?

This one comes up more than you'd think. If the car stops recognizing fobs that were working fine before, the most common causes are a dead or dying 12-volt battery in the car, and a depleted fob battery. A low vehicle battery can cause the immobilizer to lose its mind a little, throwing a key-not-detected warning even with a perfectly good fob. Charge or replace the 12-volt first and retest.

If the car battery is fine and fresh fob batteries do not fix it, the fob registration can occasionally get corrupted. That requires re-registering through the OBD port. I carry the equipment to do that on site, so if you are in Downtown Escondido it is a quick call.

Can I program a second smart key myself so I have a backup?

No. The 2012 Sonata smart key system does not have an owner-accessible add-a-key procedure. There is no ignition sequence or button trick that works here. Programming requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to register the new fob to the vehicle's immobilizer.
