2008 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2008 Hyundai Sonata Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Downtown El Cajon picked up a used 2008 Sonata and figured the spare key situation could wait. It waited until he was standing outside a convenience store at night with his only key sitting on the seat, doors locked.

He called me before he called a tow truck, which was the right move. I pulled up to him off the main strip, got the door open, and we talked about where things stood. One key, no spare, car in good shape otherwise. He wanted to know what a second key would run him at the dealer. I told him the dealer route on these typically means scheduling, waiting, and paying a significant amount for what is not a complicated job on a 2008.

I had the blank and the tools with me. I cut the replacement blade to match his existing key, programmed the transponder chip so the immobilizer would accept it, and verified it started clean. The whole thing happened in the parking lot under a streetlight.

He made a comment about how he thought key programming was a dealer-only thing. A lot of people do. On a vehicle this age, a mobile locksmith with the right programmer handles it at the car, no appointment, no tow, no waiting three days for parts to be ordered.

He left with a spare in his pocket and paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted. That spare also changes his situation next time around. If he loses the original, it is an add-a-key job rather than all-keys-lost, and on these Sonatas that difference in complexity is real.
