2000 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2000 Hyundai Sonata actually use?

It's a plain metal key. No fob, no remote, no transponder chip. You put it in the ignition cylinder and turn it. That's the system on this generation. There's no programming step, no immobilizer enrollment, nothing to pair. The key just needs to be cut to match your locks. If someone is quoting you a programming fee for this vehicle, that fee doesn't apply here. The job is cutting the blade correctly and that's it.

Q: How long does the dealer process take for a 2000 Sonata key replacement?

Longer than it should for something this simple. Dealers schedule key work around service bays that are already packed with newer vehicles, and a 25-year-old Sonata is not their priority. Owners of older Hyundais commonly report being told to leave the car overnight or wait several days just for a shop opening. With EZ Car Keyz, there's no appointment queue. I come to your location in National City, cut the key on site, and you're done.

Q: My 2000 Sonata key turns hard and sometimes doesn't turn at all. Is that a key problem or a lock problem?

Usually the lock. After more than two decades, the tumblers inside these cylinders wear down and the springs weaken. A worn cylinder can feel fine with the original key for years, then start binding, sticking, or outright refusing to turn. Sometimes it happens in the ignition, sometimes in the door lock, sometimes both. If a freshly cut key doesn't solve it, the cylinder itself needs attention. I can diagnose that on the spot.

Q: I only have one key left for my 2000 Sonata. Should I get a spare cut now or wait until there's a problem?

Get the spare now. One key left means you're one bad day from being stranded. On a car this old, if that last key gets lost, stolen, or snapped in the lock, your options are picking the lock, decoding from the cylinder, or getting creative, and those all take more time than cutting a duplicate from a working key. Duplicating from an existing key is the fastest and cheapest route. Waiting until it's gone complicates everything.

2000 Hyundai Sonata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy parked off National Avenue in Old Town National City. He'd moved here from out of state, had one key left for his 2000 Sonata, and snapped it in the door lock trying to force it on a cold morning. Half the key was still inside the cylinder.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and said the wait for a service bay was a couple of days out.

I pulled up with the van, extracted the broken blade from the cylinder, and checked the lock for damage while I was in there. The cylinder was worn but still functional. I decoded the cuts from the lock face, ran a new key blank, and cut it right there on the street. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Turned smooth both ways.

The whole thing took maybe 25 minutes. He didn't tow it anywhere. He drove to work that afternoon.

The dealer never came up again after I quoted him. He just said "yeah, let's do it" and watched me work.

Hyundai Sonata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Hyundai dealer to get a replacement key for a 2000 Sonata?▼

Not at all. The 2000 Sonata uses a standard metal key with no electronic programming involved. Any competent automotive locksmith can cut a replacement on site by decoding your existing lock or using the key code tied to your vehicle. No dealer equipment, no appointment, no tow required. We come to you in Old Town National City or wherever the car is sitting, and the job gets done in one visit.
