The owner of a 2006 Hyundai Sonata had been fighting his ignition for about three weeks by the time he called me. Not a hard jam, just that slow-grinding resistance where some mornings it turned fine and some mornings he sat there coaxing it for five minutes before it freed up. He had been working the key back and forth so many times the blade was starting to look tired.
The dealer had already looked at it. They said the cylinder was worn and quoted him a complete assembly replacement plus labor. His buddy told him to call a locksmith before agreeing to that.
I pulled the cylinder and found the real problem: three worn wafers inside the lock, not the whole assembly. The rest of the cylinder was fine. I decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Then I ran the programming sequence through the OBD port so the new key's transponder registered with the immobilizer. Remote functions verified on all four buttons.
I laid the old wafers on the hood so he could see exactly what had been causing the drag. He looked at them for a second and said something like, "that is it?"
That is it. The cylinder turns smooth now. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted for parts he did not need.
