2004 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Hyundai to the dealer?

Not for a 2004 Sonata. Dealers will tell you to tow it in, and for some newer vehicles with complex electronic systems that might make sense. But this car takes a metal key. I come to wherever it is sitting, cut the key on site, and you drive away. The tow is an extra expense that serves the dealer's schedule, not yours.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm the correct key specs for your Sonata. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, done on site in minutes without any backend authorization process.

Q: A locksmith already cut me a key and it turns in the ignition but the car acts up. What is going on?

A key that turns but does not work reliably is almost always a cut problem, not an electronics problem. On a 2004 Sonata, a key traced off a worn original can be off just enough to feel correct while not fully engaging the wafers in the cylinder. The cylinder on these cars can also get worn or sticky after twenty-plus years, meaning a marginally cut key works sometimes and not others.

Q: My key is getting hard to turn in the ignition. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either, but on a 2004 Sonata the two are usually related. Twenty years of use wears both the key blade and the cylinder wafers together. A worn key accelerates cylinder wear, and a worn cylinder chews up keys faster. If you are forcing it, stop. Forcing a worn key through a stiff cylinder is how you end up with a broken key stuck inside.

2004 Hyundai Sonata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman parked near the waterfront in Downtown IB. She had her 2004 Sonata and zero working keys.

Not lost, exactly. The one she had was a hardware store copy that had been the "spare" for so long the original was gone. The copy had been ground a little off on one side and it was chewing up the ignition cylinder every time she used it.

She had already called the dealer. They wanted her to tow it in, and the wait time for the service department was days out.

I drove my van to her, decoded the lock on site, and cut a fresh key to the correct profile. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Smooth both ways. No drama.

She mentioned she had no idea a mobile locksmith could handle something this old. She assumed I only did newer cars with computers involved. The 2004 Sonata is exactly the kind of job I can knock out fast, right where the car is sitting, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost her even before the tow bill.

Hyundai Sonata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call me and I come to you in Imperial Beach, Downtown IB included. I carry the blanks and cutting equipment to handle your 2004 Sonata on site. No tow truck, no waiting for a dealer appointment, no figuring out a ride. A lot of people assume a car this age needs to go somewhere for a key to be made. It does not. I decode the lock or pull the key code and cut the replacement right there.
