2023 Hyundai Sonata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the programming take once you get to my car?

Depends on the situation. Adding a spare when you still have a working key is quicker. All-keys-lost takes longer because the system needs a PIN read first, and there is a security access delay built into the immobilizer before it opens the registration menu. That wait is part of the process, not a sign anything is wrong. Either way, the whole job from the time I arrive is typically under an hour.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

In almost every case, yes. A dealer appointment for a 2023 Sonata smart key can mean days of wait time, and that assumes they have the fob in stock. Owners on Hyundai forums have reported parts delays that stretched their situation out well beyond what they expected. On top of that, some dealers require the car to be towed to their lot before they will even start the process. I come to the car. Same day, usually same afternoon.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I just pair it myself or have you pair it when you arrive?

I can pair it when I arrive, as long as the blank is the correct one for your 2023 Sonata. That is the part worth double-checking before I show up. The fob that came off a random third-party listing may or may not be compatible, and if it is not, I bring a confirmed blank anyway so the job still gets done. What you cannot do is pair it yourself. This generation has no owner-accessible programming sequence.

Q: My car still starts fine but my fob range has gotten really short. Is that a key problem or a car problem?

Short range on a 2023 Sonata fob is usually the battery. The CR2450 in this fob holds a solid charge for a couple of years under normal use, but when it starts to go, reduced range is often the first sign before you get to a warning on the dash. Swap the battery with a confirmed CR2450 (not a CR2032, which is the wrong size) and retest.

2023 Hyundai Sonata Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a pin from a guy in the Otay Ranch area of Chula Vista.

He was out near the back end of a parking lot, and his message said something like "I think I left my only fob in a cart return and someone grabbed it." Not locked out exactly, because he was standing next to the car when he texted me. But he had no way to start it, and he knew it.

By the time I pulled up, he had already called a dealer. They told him to tow it in and schedule a programming appointment. He lived ten minutes from that parking lot and the idea of towing a car that was just sitting there, drivable in every other way, did not sit right with him.

I popped my kit open on the trunk of my van and read the data I needed through the OBD port. The Sonata's immobilizer requires a PIN read before it lets you register anything new, and that step has a built-in wait on this platform. Not long, but you sit there and let the system do what it needs to do. I cut the emergency blade from the door profile, built the new fob, ran the pairing sequence, and walked every function before I packed up.

He asked me what would have happened if he had just towed it to the dealer. I told him probably a day or two wait minimum, and a bill that would have made him wince. He nodded like he already knew. I was back on the 125 in under an hour.

Hyundai Sonata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Hyundai key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me. Hyundai dealer service departments mostly run Monday through Friday with limited Saturday windows and nothing on Sunday. That gap matters more than people realize until they are standing next to a car they cannot start at 8 PM on a Saturday. I work nights and weekends because that is exactly when these situations come up. The 2023 Sonata is not a vehicle that requires a dealer visit for key work.
