The Ferry Landing area of Coronado is waterfront parking, and a lot of people leave their cars there while they walk or grab food. One afternoon I got a call from someone who had set their 2016 Sonata fob on the seat, shut the door with the mechanical insert key still in their pocket, and walked off. By the time they came back, the fob was locked inside and the fob battery had apparently been weak for a while - when they held it up to the door handle to try the passive unlock, nothing happened. The fob was right there, inches away through the glass, and the car acted like it did not exist.
I parked nearby and walked over to where they were standing next to the car looking at the fob through the window.
First I got them into the vehicle. Then I pulled the fob out and opened it up on the hood. The CR2032 inside was not dead, but it tested low enough that the car was dropping the signal at anything past a foot or two. Swapped the battery, reseated the contacts, and handed it back. The door handles lit up immediately.
We ran every button and both door handles before I packed up. Locked, unlocked, touch unlock from both sides. Everything came back.
They had already looked up the dealer and were prepared to leave the car there until a service appointment opened. That did not end up being necessary.
