1998 Lexus SC Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy out in San Pasqual Valley called me about his 1998 Lexus SC. His fob had been getting flaky for a few weeks, shorter range on the lock button, then the car started taking two or three turns of the key before it would actually fire. He figured the remote was dying and the ignition issue was unrelated. Easy to think that way.
He had been visiting family out there and the SC had been sitting in the driveway more than usual. When I got there, the blade still turned, but the engine would crank and stumble before catching. That pattern on a mid-nineties Lexus points toward the immobilizer not reading the transponder cleanly, not a fuel or ignition problem. The fob body had also been pried open at some point, and the battery contact was slightly bent away from the cell.
I straightened the contact, seated a fresh CR1616 correctly, and tested the remote range and the start behavior. It fired right up on the first turn and held idle without stumbling.
He had already called a dealer in the area. They wanted him to tow it in, said they would need to look at the immobilizer system and possibly order parts. He was looking at a wait, a tow bill, and a number he was not happy about. The fix he actually needed was a contact adjustment and the right battery, done in his parents' driveway in about twenty minutes.
That is the part I like about this job. Sometimes the small thing is the real thing.
