2010 Lexus SC Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
People sit on getting a spare key longer than they should. They buy the car used, it comes with one key, and the plan is always "I'll deal with that later." Then later shows up at the worst time.
A woman over in the Beyer Blvd Corridor in San Ysidro had been running on a single key for a couple of years after buying her 2010 Lexus SC used. The key had a hairline crack running along the head of the blade where the plastic meets the metal. She didn't think much of it. Then she dropped it, the crack gave way, and the blade snapped partially off while it was in the door lock.
She had the broken pieces. That mattered.
I got the blade fragment out of the cylinder without damaging the lock. Then I looked at the chip situation. The transponder chip in the broken key head was still intact and readable. Because she had the original key, even in pieces, I could work from what was already paired to the car instead of going the longer route. I decoded the lock, cut two new key blades to match, and transferred the original chip into a fresh key shell. Then I programmed a second key so she'd have a proper backup this time.
About 45 minutes on site, start to finish. She watched the whole thing from her doorstep. When I handed her two working keys she tried both in the ignition herself before I packed up, which is the right instinct.
If she'd gone to the dealer without the broken key, that job gets more complicated and more expensive fast.
