2003 Lexus SC
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2003 Lexus SC Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in the CSUSM Area of San Marcos, a woman called me about her 2003 Lexus SC. She had bought it used a few years back with one key and never got around to cutting a spare.

That one key finally gave out in the worst way possible: the housing cracked along the seam, and when she tried to use the blade manually, it snapped off inside the door lock cylinder.

She had the broken housing in her hand when I got there. Fob body split, blade fragment still stuck in the lock. Zero working keys.

First thing I did was extract the broken blade from the cylinder. Then I checked the chip inside the cracked housing. On these remote head keys, the transponder sits inside the plastic head, and even when the housing is destroyed, the chip itself usually survives. Hers was intact. That mattered a lot.

Because I could read the transponder data off the original chip, I did not have to treat this as a full all-keys-lost job. I transferred what I needed, cut two new key blades to the vehicle, rebuilt the working chip into a new housing, and had both keys programmed and tested on site.

Start to finish was about 45 minutes. She ended up with two working keys instead of one, which is what she should have had all along. The dealer had already been called. Their quote assumed all-keys-lost, a tow to the dealership, and a wait time of several days. She saved a good chunk and did not move the car once.

If you still have your broken fob, even if it is in pieces, bring it. That chip is often the difference between a straightforward job and a longer reset process.
