2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement fob last on a 2018 Eclipse Cross?

As long as the original, if it is the right part and programmed correctly. The electronics do not degrade from the programming process itself. What actually wears on these fobs over time is the physical shell, the buttons, and occasionally the battery contact clips if the CR2032 gets swapped carelessly a few too many times.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. We back our work. If the fob loses remote function, the vehicle stops recognizing it, or anything develops after we leave, we come back and sort it out. This is exactly why buying a fob online and finding someone cheap to program it is a gamble. A fob that programs but then drifts out of reliable function a few weeks later is a real pattern with off-spec blanks on Mitsubishi's smart key platform.

Q: I have a working key but I want a spare. Can a second fob be added to a 2018 Eclipse Cross without erasing the first one?

Yes, and this is worth doing while your original is still working. Adding a spare fob to this vehicle requires diagnostic equipment to enroll the new key into the system, but the process does not automatically wipe existing keys the way an all-keys-lost reset does. Both fobs end up registered and functional. The time to get a spare is not when you are already locked out. It is right now, on your schedule, in your driveway.

Q: My 2018 Eclipse Cross shows a key warning on the dash even though I am holding the fob. What does that mean?

Usually it means the vehicle is having trouble reading the fob's signal, not that the key is unpaired. Start with the CR2032. A cell that reads low-but-not-dead on a basic meter can still fail to give the system the clean signal it wants, especially in warmer weather when the car has been sitting in the sun. Swap the battery, make sure it is seated flat with the positive side oriented correctly, and retest. If the warning clears, you are done.

2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Old Poway on a Tuesday evening, pediatrician parking lot on Community Road. She called me at about seven, voice tight, not panicked yet but getting there. Her kid had spiked a fever at the appointment and she needed to get home, then over to the pharmacy before it closed.

Her 2018 Eclipse Cross would not respond to the fob. Door handles were dead to the touch, push-button start was ignoring her completely. She tried the backup insertion point on the door and got in manually, but the start system would not recognize the key was present. The dealer's service line had already rolled to voicemail.

When I pulled up, I started where I always start: the battery. Popped the fob open right there on the hood. CR2032 still had some voltage on the meter, but it was soft, right at the edge of where the system stops trusting it. Swapped it out, reseated everything clean. The door handles woke up. But the push-button start was still flat.

That told me something got confused in the pairing state, possibly from the fob browning out repeatedly and the vehicle losing confidence in it. I connected through the OBD port, ran a fresh key registration cycle, and let the sequence complete. First attempt, the system accepted it.

She was backing out of that parking lot before eight. Pharmacy run happened, kid was home and medicated and in bed well before nine.

The dealer being closed was not the problem. The problem would have been waiting until they opened in the morning. That is where I come in.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket fobs for the 2018 Eclipse Cross?▼

We source fobs built to OEM specification and verified for this exact vehicle. The reason that matters on the Eclipse Cross specifically is that this system is selective during the enrollment process in a way that does not always surface immediately. Some aftermarket fobs will pair and appear functional, and then passive entry range degrades or the remote buttons go unreliable within a short time while the start function keeps working.
