2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Eclipse Cross to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. A mobile locksmith with proper diagnostic coverage for this vehicle can do the all-keys-lost procedure right where the car is parked. Dealers will often tell you to tow it in, which adds cost and time before the key work even starts. If you are in Lemon Grove or along the Spring Valley border, I come to you.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost replacement take on site?

For the 2020 Eclipse Cross, count on 45 minutes to about an hour on site. The security system reset has a timed sequence built into it that you cannot rush. Once the reset completes and the new fob is registered, I run through every function before I leave. At the dealer, the same job stretches out because of scheduling, the tow if required, and shop queue time.

Q: My Eclipse Cross fob works sometimes and fails other times. Is that the battery or something worse?

Intermittent behavior on these fobs is usually the battery going soft before it fully quits. The CR2032 in the factory fob can read as "present" on a basic battery tester but still not have enough output to power the fob reliably through the vehicle's security handshake. What you get is a fob that starts the car fine in the morning but throws a key-not-detected warning in a hot parking lot an hour later. Heat kills weak batteries faster.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2020 Eclipse Cross. Can I program it myself?

No. There is no self-programming sequence for the smart key system on this vehicle. The fob has to be registered to the vehicle through the OBD port using diagnostic equipment. The ignition-turn sequences you might find online are for older vehicles with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder. That is a completely different system. If you already bought the fob, bring the vehicle to me in Lemon Grove and I can pair it.

2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near the Spring Valley border in Lemon Grove, a woman called me because she had done her homework before dialing.

She had the car, a 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, and she had one fob left. She wanted a spare before that one fob became zero fobs and the situation got expensive. Smart thinking. A lot of owners wait until they are standing in a parking lot with nothing, and that changes the whole conversation.

She had found my BSIS license number on the website before I showed up. Said she had a bad experience with an unlicensed guy a year earlier on a different car. No company name on the receipt, no license number, phone went cold not long after. So she checked mine ahead of time. I get that. LCO-6792 is on the BSIS site and it takes about thirty seconds to verify.

I parked the van, confirmed the existing fob was reading correctly, and connected to the OBD port to add the new fob to the vehicle's security system. The system requires diagnostic equipment to register a new smart key. The new fob paired without any residual fault codes, and I walked both fobs through every function before I packed up.

She got a receipt with a real license number, a real business name, and a phone number that will still work next year. The dealer had been her backup plan. After hearing what they quoted for the same job, she said she was glad she called first.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2020 Eclipse Cross. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost on this vehicle is something we handle on site. The process involves connecting to the OBD port, resetting the vehicle security system so it forgets the old fobs, and registering fresh smart keys. There is no way to do this without professional diagnostic equipment on this system, but you also do not need to tow the car anywhere. We come to you in Lemon Grove.
