I was out near The Crosby on a Tuesday, parked on her street while she flagged me down from the driveway.
She had a 2006 tC and the key was basically held together by habit. The shell had split right at the key ring, the two top buttons had no real click left, and the blade was worn enough that she had to wiggle it before the ignition caught. She'd been managing it for months. Then one morning the remote buttons stopped responding altogether, and that was the end of her patience.
She'd already called the dealer. They quoted her for a full replacement key, programmed from scratch, which would have meant leaving the car, waiting, and paying for parts and labor on a key where most of the working components were still functional.
I popped the shell open on the hood of my van. The chip read fine. The RF board tested fine too, which told me the button issue was the battery and the contact points, not the board itself. The battery in there was a CR2016 that had been sitting in a cracked shell for who knows how long, and one of the contact clips had a slight bend from the shell flexing around it.
Fresh shell, straightened contacts, new CR2016, and I transferred her existing chip and board over. Then I cut a new blade to match her ignition. Tested the locks, tested the start, walked every button.
She asked what the dealer would have done differently. Honestly, not much, except charge more for parts they didn't need to replace.
