2008 Scion TC
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and why does mine have to be programmed?

A remote head key is one unit: a physical blade that goes into the ignition, and an electronic module built into the key head that handles both the remote functions and the transponder signal. Every time you turn the key, the transponder talks to the immobilizer. If the car does not recognize that signal, the engine will crank and then immediately cut out, or it will not start at all. That recognition is not automatic with a new key.

Q: Do I need to be there the whole time?

Just the start and finish. I check your ID and registration before touching anything, and I do a full button and ignition test with you at the end. In between, most people go back inside and let me work.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2008 Scion tC. Can you just program it?

Maybe. The catch with buying fobs online for these is that not every aftermarket housing ships with the right internals already installed. The fob needs to carry the correct components for your vehicle's system, and some aftermarket units have mixed results once you get into programming. If the fob you bought is the right fitment and has the correct board, I can program it.

Q: My 2008 Scion tC starts and then immediately dies. Is that a key or immobilizer problem?

That start-and-stall pattern is a classic immobilizer symptom. The engine fires because the mechanical side of the key turned the ignition, then the vehicle security system cuts fuel or spark because it did not get the right signal from the transponder. On the 2008 tC it can also happen when the transponder chip inside a worn key head gets physically damaged or the chip shifts in the housing over time.

2008 Scion TC Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Richland, a graphic designer working from a studio space had been putting off getting a spare key for her 2008 Scion tC for about two years.

Then her only key took a hit at the bottom of her bag and the fob side stopped responding. Blade still worked fine, car still started, but no remote lock or unlock, and the range on the buttons had been dying for months before that.

She called the dealer first. Parts quoted her the fob at their counter price, programming was a separate line item, and they told her she would need to schedule and bring the car in during shop hours. She was on deadline for a client project and a weekday service appointment was not happening.

I met her in the studio parking lot during her lunch break in Richland. Pulled the key apart right on the hood, checked the battery contact, and confirmed it was the fob electronics, not just a loose CR2016. New housing, blade cut to her vehicle, and programming through the OBD port.

The whole job was about 30 minutes. I walked through every button with her before I packed up. She got back to her desk before her lunch was over. The dealer route would have cost her way more and half a workday. Neither of us needed to talk about that part.

Scion TC Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2008 Scion tC remote head key have?▼

Three buttons. On these keys the standard layout covers lock, unlock, and trunk release. All three get tested during the programming visit before I leave. If any button feels sticky or unresponsive after programming, that is usually the rubber pad inside the housing, not a programming issue, and it is worth addressing at the same time.
