2014 Scion TC
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a smart key and how does it actually work on the 2014 TC?

The fob does two separate things. The remote side handles lock and unlock wirelessly, and the battery powers that. But there's also a transponder chip inside the fob that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer. Every time you press the start button, the car sends a signal, the chip in the fob responds with a code, and if that code matches what's registered, the engine starts.

Q: What if I need a key replaced after hours or on a weekend near CSUSM?

Call anyway. We run seven days a week, 6 AM to 11:30 PM, and that includes weekends and most holidays. If you're stuck near the CSUSM area on a Saturday night, that's exactly the kind of call we built this service around. No extra fees for evenings or weekends.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2014 TC. Can I program it myself to save money?

No, and this comes up constantly. The TC's smart key system has no onboard self-programming sequence for the fob. There's no button combination, no ignition-turn trick, nothing you can do from the driver's seat. That kind of DIY relearn exists on some older vehicles with basic transponder keys, but not on this system. The fob has to be enrolled through the OBD port using a diagnostic tool that can talk to the vehicle's security system.

Q: My 2014 TC push-button start works but the door handles stopped waking up when I approach. Is that a key problem?

Probably not the key. If the start button still sees the fob and the engine starts normally, the fob's transponder side is fine. Touch-sensitive door handles on this system have their own sensors and wiring. A dead or dirty sensor on one handle, especially the driver's side, is a common complaint on these cars and it's a separate issue from the fob itself. Check whether it's both handles or just one.

2014 Scion TC Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was parked near the Five Below on San Marcos Boulevard, on her break, and she had already called the Toyota dealer. They told her to bring the car in, quoted her a wait of several days for an appointment, and the price was enough that she went looking for another option. That's when she found me.

The job itself was a smart key replacement on her 2014 Scion TC. She still had her original fob, but it had stopped being recognized. The push-button start would sit there dead, the door handles weren't waking up, and she'd been getting in manually with the emergency blade tucked inside the fob. She'd already swapped the CR1632 herself, which was the right first move. The battery wasn't the problem.

I pulled up to the lot with my tools and connected to the OBD port. The TC's security system needed to see a registered key before it would let me into the programming menu, which is why having at least one working key on hand matters. She had the original, even if it was acting up, and that got me where I needed to go.

New fob enrolled, cut a replacement blade to match the door and ignition, and walked through every function in the parking lot. Push-button start, door lock, door unlock, the full check. Everything came back normal. She made it back inside Five Below before her break ended.

She mentioned the dealer price on her way out. I just told her the immobilizer doesn't know which parking lot the key was programmed in.

Scion TC Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2014 Scion TC smart key fob have?▼

Three buttons. Lock, unlock, and a third for the alarm or trunk, depending on how it's set up on your specific car. When you call, we already have the fob specs pulled for the TC, so there's no back-and-forth about which version you have before we head out.
