I got a call from a guy parked near a hostel in North Park. He was mid road trip, somewhere between Los Angeles and the border, and his only key had stopped working somewhere on the 5. By the time he pulled off in San Diego and figured out what was happening, the fob would not lock or unlock the doors and he was genuinely not sure if the car would start again if he shut it off. So he left it running in a parking lot and called me.
He thought it was a dead fob battery. Reasonable guess. But when I got there and opened the fob housing, the contacts were corroded pretty badly, not just the battery. Looked like moisture had gotten in at some point, maybe a long time ago, and just quietly done damage. The blade was fine, the car would still start, but the remote side was gone.
I had the right replacement unit in the van. Cut the blade on site to match his ignition, programmed the transponder through the OBD port, tested the lock, unlock, and panic buttons, confirmed the engine started and idled clean. About 30 minutes total, including the time it took him to dig his registration out of a duffel bag in the back seat.
He had already called the dealer before he called me. They told him to tow it in, earliest appointment the next afternoon. He was trying to make it to Tijuana that evening. The dealer route was not going to work for him on any level, and he saved a good chunk going the mobile route anyway.
