Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key from my RDX?

Yes. During Immobilizer Setup on this generation RDX, any key not present during programming is erased from the system’s memory. Acura’s own procedure notes that if multiple keys are already stored, you must use Add Multiple Keys, and any key not registered in that session will no longer start the engine. That means a lost flip key with the correct chip cannot start the vehicle after I reprogram with only your current keys. If you are worried about someone using the metal blade to open the door, we can rekey the cylinder too.

Q: If my fob battery dies, will the car still start?

Yes. The CR1616 only powers the remote buttons. The immobilizer chip inside the 2008 Acura RDX flip key is passive. It does not rely on the coin battery. Even with a dead remote, you can unlock the door with the metal blade and start the engine as long as the transponder is recognized. If it cranks but will not start and the green key icon is flashing, that is not a battery issue. That is an immobilizer communication problem that needs to be diagnosed.

Q: Why does my RDX crank but show a flashing green key light?

Blunt answer. The immobilizer is not seeing a valid transponder. On the 2008 RDX, the green key indicator in the cluster will flash if the code from the ID46 chip does not match what is stored in the immobilizer unit. That can be a damaged chip, a key that was never registered, or a key that was erased during a previous programming session. I verify this by scanning for immobilizer data and checking key registration status before condemning anything. Sometimes it is the key. Sometimes it is wiring at the ignition cylinder. You test first.

Q: My flip key will not stay open. Do I need a whole new key?

Not always. Acura addressed this in Service Bulletin 10-008 for 2008 to 2012 RDX. The issue is the retractable master key case not locking in the extended position. The fix is replacing the key case only, using updated cases like 35121-STX-305 or 35121-STX-306 depending on Driver 1 or Driver 2. Your original transmitter board and immobilizer chip transfer over. No change to the vehicle memory is required unless you are adding an additional key at the same time.

2008 Acura RDX Remote flip key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard when a 2008 Acura RDX owner walked up holding her flip key open like it had personally offended her.

“It won’t stay locked out,” she said. The blade kept flopping back into the shell.

That is a known issue on these. Acura put out Service Bulletin 10-008 for retractable master keys that will not lock in the extended position on 2008 to 2012 RDX. The fix is replacing the key case, part numbers 35121-STX-305 for Driver 1 and 35121-STX-306 for Driver 2. The transmitter and transponder get swapped over.

Her FCC ID was N5F0602A1A, part number 35111-STX-329, four buttons, CR1616 inside. The remote side was fine. The immobilizer chip was fine. It was just the hinge detent worn smooth.

I cut a fresh HON66 blade, moved her board and ID46 chip into a new housing, and then hooked up through OBD to run Immobilizer Setup. On these, when you add keys, every key has to be present or it gets erased from memory.

We tested lock, unlock, rear hatch, panic, and verified the green key light went out normally on start.

She just wanted a key that felt solid again. That is exactly what she left with.
