She told me it worked in the morning and quit by evening. The dash flashed “Keyless Access System Problem” and sometimes “Key not detected.” Another locksmith had made her a replacement about a week earlier.
When I scanned it, the immobilizer side told the truth. The RDX uses a Philips ID 46 chip inside that smart key. The remote functions can look fine even when the transponder data is wrong. That is exactly what happened here. Lock and unlock worked. The proximity antennas would see the fob once in a while. But after a few drive cycles, the immobilizer handshake failed and the car refused to start consistently.
Her RDX is second generation, 2013 to 2018, and all trims run the Smart Entry system with a keyless access control unit tied to the PCM. No self programming trick exists for adding a smart key. It has to be registered through the diagnostic port and the system wipes out all other keys during that process.
I built her a correct key matched to her system, registered it properly, and replaced the weak CR2032 while I had it open. After that, I walked every door handle sensor and verified the hatch button.
She had called the dealer first. By the time we were done in her parking spot, she was back inside studying instead of waiting around somewhere else.
