Audi uses what they call an immobilizer system. Every Audi key since the early 2000s has a tiny transponder chip embedded in the head. When you insert the key or bring the smart fob near the car, the immobilizer sends a challenge signal to the chip. If the chip responds with the correct encrypted code, the engine starts. If not, nothing. On older Audis this is a Megamos 48 chip. On newer models it is a more advanced encrypted system tied to the BCM2 module. Either way, that chip is why your key costs more than a hardware store copy.
