It was a Saturday evening, Wood Ranch side of Simi Valley, and the call came in from a guy who'd been at a long event near one of the hotels out there. He walked back to his 2005 A8 and the key wouldn't start the car. Not intermittent. Fully dead. The blade still turned the cylinder but nothing happened after that.
He'd already tried a new CR2032 at a nearby drugstore. Didn't help.
I drove out. When I got there he had the new battery sitting correctly in the fob, contacts looked fine. I tested the blade cut against the cylinder and it was turning cleanly. The issue was the remote and transponder functions, not the mechanical side.
On this generation A8, the immobilizer is not forgiving. If the transponder in the fob stops communicating, the engine won't run. The car will turn over or do nothing at all, depending on how the module reads the situation. His fell into the "nothing happens" category, which usually means the module isn't seeing the key at all.
I programmed a replacement flip key on site, cut the blade to his lock, tested every button, and watched him drive out of that parking lot before I packed up. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a significant wait and a price that made him hesitate before he even looked for alternatives. He paid a fraction of that.
The A8 has a reputation for being a dealer-only job. It isn't.
