A pharmaceutical rep was getting tires done near Corriganville Movie Ranch in Simi Valley when she asked the shop if they knew anyone who could fix her key. They sent her my way.
Her 2001 Audi A8 flip key was barely holding together. The HU66 blade pivot had worn to the point where it would not lock open. She had been pinching it closed with her thumb every time she turned the ignition. Months of that. The dealer told her the whole key needed to be replaced, cut and programmed from scratch.
I pulled up, opened the key on her hood, and used my VVDI Key Tool to read the Megamos ID48 chip. Clean signal, valid crypto data, matched the immobilizer. The 4D0837231P remote board was fine too, all four buttons still firing. The only things actually broken were the plastic shell and the worn blade.
Swapped the chip and board into a fresh aftermarket shell, cut a new HU66 blade to code, and tested every function. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Blade snapped open and locked firm. Ignition turned smooth.
She stood there turning the key over in her hand like it was a different car. The whole visit took about 35 minutes. The internals of that key had years left in them. She just needed someone willing to look before replacing everything.
