A graphic designer in Simi Valley, over in the Tapo Canyon Road corridor, called me about her 2004 A8. The smart fob housing had cracked open from a drop on the garage floor. The emergency HU66 blade was rattling loose inside, and the shell was split at the seam near the flip release button.
She had already called the Audi dealer. They quoted her a full replacement fob, programmed from scratch. Weeks to order. No mention that her electronics might be perfectly fine inside that cracked plastic.
I drove out and started by connecting my ACDP to the OBD port and reading the BCM2 immobilizer data as a backup. On these D3 A8s, the security info lives in the 09 module, and having that data backed up means if anything goes sideways during the swap, I can recover. It took a few minutes.
Then I opened her broken fob on the hood. The circuit board, the Megamos 48 chip, the antenna coil, all sitting there undamaged. Just a busted shell. I transferred everything into a fresh 4D0837231P housing, seated a new CR2032, and snapped the HU66 blade back into its channel.
Tested all four buttons. Tested Kessy detection at the driver door handle, passenger door, trunk. Tested push to start. Everything responded like the fob was brand new.
She didn't need a new key. She needed new plastic and someone willing to look before replacing the whole thing.
