She was up in the Hillsides area of Ventura, at an outdoor shopping area, pushing her baby in a stroller when someone grabbed her bag off the handle. Keys, wallet, phone, gone. She borrowed a phone from a store employee and called her husband, then the police, then me.
Her 1999 Audi A8 was at home and there were zero keys for it. Her husband called the Audi dealer while she was still with the police. The dealer said they could order a key but the car would need to be towed in, it would take several business days, and because the stolen key could still open and start the car, they recommended a full immobilizer reset on top of the key order. The combined estimate was well over what anyone wants to hear when they've just had their bag stolen.
I got there that evening. All-keys-lost on one of these is a different job than adding a spare. When you add a spare, the car already trusts an existing key and you're just registering another one alongside it. I cleared the immobilizer memory, enrolled two new fobs, decoded the lock for the flip blade cut, and cut both blades on site. Tested every button on both fobs, tested both blades in the ignition and the door lock, walked the car.
She drove home that night with her baby. The stolen key won't open the doors or start the engine. The dealer estimate included a tow, days of waiting, and a bill that was a significant chunk more than what she paid me.
The police took a report. I took care of the car.
