I got a call out to Via Marina in Oxnard from someone who worked at a dog grooming shop. She had a 2014 A8 and a problem she couldn't explain: the key worked fine in the morning, then by afternoon the push-button start wouldn't detect it. She'd wave it near the console, hold it flat against the button, nothing. Then she'd try again an hour later and it would start like nothing happened. She was convinced the car had an antenna issue.
She'd already had a key made by another locksmith a few weeks before this started. That's usually the detail that changes the whole conversation.
I connected my diagnostic equipment and read the transponder data out of the key she was using. The chip had been programmed with the wrong profile for the generation of immobilizer in her car. It was close enough to pass initial enrollment, but the vehicle's security system does a deeper check over multiple drive cycles, and eventually it started catching the mismatch. The intermittent detection was the car quietly rejecting it on and off before the failure became permanent.
I programmed a new key with the correct chip profile matched to her vehicle and fob. While I had everything open I also checked the CR2032 -- it was reading low, which was adding noise to an already unstable situation. Fresh battery, correct chip, done on site.
She asked if the dealer would have caught the original locksmith's mistake. Probably not before charging her for a full replacement on their end, and that conversation would have happened in a service bay instead of a parking lot in Via Marina.
The replacement has held up. The difference between a key that lasts a week and one that lasts is getting the chip right the first time.
