A vet tech who works at a dog grooming place down by Fisherman's Wharf at the Harbor in Oxnard called me about her 2014 A8. Another locksmith had made her a key maybe ten days earlier. It worked fine at first. Then the push-to-start started ignoring the fob by evening, even though mornings were fine. She thought the car had an antenna going bad.
I pulled her fob apart on the hood of the car and read the chip with my VVDI2. That told the whole story. The previous tech had used a generic transponder that was close to the Megamos AES spec but not a true match. On BCM2 Audis, a close-but-wrong chip can pass the initial handshake during programming and then fail once the immobilizer runs its deeper cryptographic verification over a few drive cycles. The car basically figures out the chip is faking it. Engine cranks, fuel injection cuts after two seconds, dash throws "Immobilizer active" or just refuses to see the key at all.
I programmed a new key with the correct Megamos AES chip matched to her BCM2 and the IYZFBSB802 fob profile. Her CR2032 was also low, which made the intermittent comfort access detection even worse. New battery, correct chip, full door walk to test every handle sensor and button.
That key has been working since. The difference between a key that lasts a week and one that lasts years is chip accuracy on BCM2 cars.
